I don't know when I first saw city hunter. All I know is the game was calling my name. I tried to fight off the urge to buy it for about a month. But, everytime I thought it was gone from my mind the game would call out to me again. Finally last week I caved in and just bought the game from Pink Godzilla, a videogame store who is based in seattle. Well what a pleasant surprise! when you first pop it in you are treated to Jazzy tunes and some pretty good anime style still shots. From the time you hit the run button and figure out how to start the game from the japanese menus you are totally comfortable with the gameplay as your thinking to yourself rolling Thunder.
Graphics are not that great! however the smooth gameplay and the cool tunes, more then make up for it. Some parallax would been a very nice addition. One thing that you are centered on is the main character, who carries a gun and is very well animated. Just him running looks cool! He does alot of blasting baddies on the screen as well as jumping, ducking, running and climbing stairs. Whew how does this guy not get tired! The levels are just huge. You will search every door and every room on your way to collecting 2 things on each level. Your lookin for a key and a computer disk. Along the way you will meet npc's who help you. They speak japanese but it's not important if you search around and talk to the npc's You will find the key and the disk if you continue on and back Track.
There are a couple of npc's of special note. At the beginning of each level you will see a desk. If you run by the desk there is an npc who will not only heal you but give you a save code if you choose the 3rd option she presents you with. I run back to start point if I find and item, need healed or just wanna stop playing and pick up the game later. Another npc of importance is in fact a nurse who is behind one of the doors. She will also heal and seems to be about the halfway point of the level. So I recommend finding her ASAP. Scientists are other npc's you need to find. They are the ones who give you the keys and the disk. One very special npc is a girl in a Bath Towel behind a door who will also heal you! Woohoo what really happened behind that door!
You will first battle some guys that are dressed like pimps. They are pretty easy targets as they usually die in one shot. Other enemies include Ninjas, flame throwers, grenade launchers, knife fighters and a boss at the end of each level. I am so glad the game was calling my name! Its a bunch of fun and reminds me so much of rolling thunder on a larger scale. The game does not come cheap. The usual price on ebay is around 40 dollars. After a couple weeks of research I found the game at Pink Godzilla for 24.99 and realized it was going to probably be my best price. I highly recommend this game if your a fan of rolling thunder. Smooth gameplay, cool tunes and just plain old fashion fun make this a nice buy. Electrohaze at the PCFX chatroom has a loosy copy of City Hunter for 15.00 dollars if you don't mind loosies. I hope you enjoyed this review and keep spreading the joy of PCEngine!
