Genji Tsushin Agedama

OK fellas, this is my first attempt at a review for a PC Engine game, so don't be too critical on me! Today we are reviewing Genji Tsushin Agedama. The story is hard to understand exactly because it's in Japanese, but in the attract mode it appears that there is a large floating city that has decided to stop by for a visit. All of the towns people are scared, and you decide to be the hero and destroy the bad guys!

Sounds like fun right? Actually it is! This game has a Adventure Island feel to it somewhat in that it's a side scrolling platformer with an automatically scrolling screen. Graphically, the game is awesome! The colors are very vibrant, and the character and enemy design are quite original! In many instances there are parts of the game that has multiple scrolling background effects. In the stage with all the clouds in the sky, there are probably 3 or 4 levels of scrolling, so it really gives it that 3D effect. Hey this was good stuff back in the day!

Stage design seems to be well thought out, and every stage seems to be different than the rest, which is nice. The controls seem tight and responsive, no complaints there, even jumping from platform to platform is done with ease.

One thing this game REALLY has going for it are the weapons! Here's how it works. There are colored orbs on the top of the screen, and basically you hold down the attack button to charge them up. The more orbs you charge, the more powerful your attack is! You start with only one or two orbs however, and you have to work your way up. Some of the more powerful attacks are amazing! Some of your special attacks include lightning strikes, a nuclear bomb type explosion that looks like a skull head, and you can summon a team of sumo wrestlers to be thrown at the enemy.

The music is quite catchy, and not bad at all. There are Hucards with better, and some with worse, but overall it sounds pretty good. The opening screen might have been a bit nicer if they had included some music however.

One gripe that I have with this game is the difficulty. On my very first try, very first life, I got to Stage 4. Now that's just a bit too easy. It did start to get a bit harder, but I'm sure if I sat down and really tried I could beat this game very easily. So I don't know if this game is geared more for children or not, but I think it might be. Maybe there is an option to switch it to a harder setting but I don't recall.

All in all - not bad! Not bad at all! Definitely a worthy purchase if you can get a decent deal on it.
